Blackbirds Fly Away

On Christmas morning,
I opened my front door
and a band of blackbirds
startled out of the snow
into the air

like rags blown away by the wind,
darkness by the light,
depression by the hope
of joy coming into the world.
There was little left for them to feed on–

my soul felt pure,
my heart knew a new beginning.
