Robins before Valentine’s Day

There’s a tree at the corner of the library
–beautiful in autumn, naked in winter–

and I walk under its uplifted branches,
bare and gray against the blue sky

and when I hear the singing,
I look up:

there’s one robin, red-breasted,
bright against a far-off field of snow

then another, higher up,
and still another and one more!

From branch to branch,
twittering and warbling and singing

they hop and dance and look down
for they see me like I see them

and the enchantment is perfect
at the end of the day.
