Orphic Crow

Walking the dog in the afternoon,
past the greenery on a fence by a road
hardly anyone ever goes down,
I hear a melodic crying. What bird
sings like that? All I see is a black crow
in a green pine.

I’ve never heard a crow
cry like that, a beautiful heart’s cry,
as if in pain or full of longing
–and now that it is summer,
what bird is still looking for a mate?
This song is impossible.

Yet I hear it.
