Observations on Two Walks

SONY DSC1) I love California in January. On Monday, I went for a walk after receiving some discouraging news, and I saw two hummingbirds flirting — and white daisies were in bloom next to the sidewalk.

2) At twilight this evening, I took my dog for a walk. I saw the flirtatious hummingbirds again. Iridescent green, they settled for a second in a leafless tree, its white bark glowing in the setting sunlight. There were many, many other little birds in that tree — a flock of bushtits (psaltriparus minimus) — and I was reminded of how early spring is one of the best times for birdwatching.

Yes, in California, mid-January hails the newborn spring!
