California Killdeer

killdeer_diagramThis afternoon, I went for a hike with my family in Lynch Canyon, which is east on HWY 80, just beyond the city of Vallejo. There was a kite-flying festival going on, which was highly entertaining to see. The wind was blowing strongly, so it was the perfect day for it.

We hiked in, away from the kite-flyers, to the reservoir. It was so interesting to listen to the sound of the wind and to see how it flowed over the grasses covering the hills. At the reservoir, we saw a killdeer by the waterside. She could almost disappear completely when she crouched down in a mud-hole by the water’s edge!

I was amazed by her perfect camouflage.
