BIRTHDAY OF MOURNING DOVES

Here you are, born-again!
One, two, nestled new

against your mother’s mourning-dove breast
that shimmers like dawn through mist.

Second hatching of the summer season,
secure at the top of the woodpile

watching, always watching, little ones,
as we coo to welcome you.

Innocent, born free from the shell, first seen
on August’s Lammas day, a blessing!

Here you are, where there is a refuge
under the wings of the Infinite One

whose beauty unfolds forever
before taking flight all around us in the sky.

Yes, the sky is calling you, but stay,
stay and whisper these nights away in song

until love, like light, has made you strong
and your time, at last, has come.
