“Under a Fallen Leaf” by Jane Beal

This morning, I looked up to see

perfectly framed, beyond my sliding glass doors,

a bold blue scrub jay

scratching in the dirt

and burying his acorn,

then covering his treasure

with a fallen leaf.

I see what you have saved for the future, beloved –
and I promise to wait until you are ready
to bring this seed into the light again.
